China has developed its first domestically made nuclear reactor and is rolling new ones rapidly. The country’s new in-house technology means that it is no longer relying on Western technologies, and it could become a new form of energy export for the country. The country is also rolling out the technology rapidly, aiming to build 6-8 reactors a year between 2020-25.
So what?
This is a significant step away from China’s coal reliance. While it brings major safety concerns, this development also opens up opportunities to leverage safety technologies and engaging with local communities most affected by nuclear reactor developments – particularly as a way to appease the public in response to community protests.
