Sarah Bentley is the founder of the UK\'s first vegan community cookery school and charity Made In Hackney. MIH fired up it\'s hobs in 2012 with a mission to collaborate with communities to grow, cook and eat more plants - as this is not only good for human health, but planetary health too. The school has since worked alongside 20,000 community members developing skills in culturally varied 100% plant-based food and aim to work prioritise (but not work exclusively with) groups who suffer disproportionately from health inequalities and therefore stand the most to gain. Our class themes are excitingly varied - ranging from cuisines such as Nigerian, Jamaican, Thai, Turkish, Chinese, Irish - and core skills such as vegan meats, vegan dairy, vegan fish and vegan cheese. We also run classes which aim to tackle barriers to healthy eating so have Feed 4 for £3s, Fifteen Minute Meals, Cooking For One and Beginners Cookery to name just a few. In response to the COVID19 crisis we set up an emergency community meal service providing meals to households who needed support during this difficult time. We have since provided over 90,000 meals and intend to continue this service - funding dependant - for as long as our community needs. In addition to our community work we offer plant-based food and community building consultation, team building events, vegan food tours, key note speeches and talks and cookery demos.
