Tax on Rising Sea Level proposed in San Francisco Bay

Resource / Tax on Rising Sea Level proposed in San Francisco Bay

By Nikki Kapp / 07 Jun 2016

- Next month 9 counties around San Francisco Bay are voting on a bill proposing to tax residents $12 a year to adapt to the rising sea level

- this is the first tax proposed specifically on sea level rise

- this tax money will be used to restore marshland which acts as a natural barrier to flooding

- mostly positive feedback. $3 million has already been poured into passing the measure - with big donations from Facebook and Google

- some negative feedback from lower-income residents who live further in land, arguing that all of the waterfront property at risk is owned by wealthy individuals and the tax should not be a flat rate but based on income.
