A study published in the journal Science Advances shows that the American Southwest and Central Plains could be on course for super-droughts the like of which they have not witnessed in over a 1,000 years. The researchers' empirical drought-reconstruction models project significantly drier conditions in the later half of the 21st century compared to the 20th century and earlier paleoclimatic intervals.
