Wanted: architect to redesign world's most remote settlement, Tristan da Cunha

Resource / Wanted: architect to redesign world's most remote settlement, Tristan da Cunha

By Gillian Phair / 15 Apr 2015

The Royal Institute of British Architects is seeking out an architect to work on the most remote settlement on Earth.

The small island of Tristan lies within the Tristan da Cunha island group, and is situated at over 1,000 miles from the nearest continental mass. The chosen architect will be required to redesign many parts of the island, including:

  • The government buildings (which are currently akin to agricultural sheds)
  • Public residences
  • The islands’ agrarian systems, with aims to improve grazing and support year-round produce growth.

This opportunity represents an exciting one-off project for one lucky architect, but more importantly, it will reshape the island's future.

What might the implications of this be? What related resources have you seen?
