The Food & Drink Federation (FDF) has developed a step-by-step guide for food manufacturing businesses looking to develop a sustainable palm oil sourcing strategy.

The guide, developed in collaboration with Central Point of Expertise on Timber (CPET), sets out five key processes to ensure responsible sourcing. These are summarised as:

•Check and map your palm oil use

•Identify impacts, risks & opportunity in your palm oil supply chain

•Commit  to sustainable palm oil

•Develop a roadmap to a sustainable palm oil supply chain

•Monitor, review and communicate the commitment to sustainable sourcing

Each section includes questions to be considered, tips on getting started, and guidance on measuring the key deliverables.

Global demand for palm oil is increasingly rapidly due to its use in a wide variety of  products including soaps, biscuits, animal feed and cleaning products. The FAO predicts global demand will double by 2020. Further resources on ensuring responsible sourcing of palm oil are also available on the FDF website.
