big pharma's nightmare - campaign for generics in rich countries

Resource / big pharma's nightmare - campaign for generics in rich countries

By Joy Green / 27 Jan 2016

long article but ineresting signal - a new campaign to circumvent Big Pharma patent profiteering in rich countries - pushing for compulsory licensing for things like new cancer drugs which are cheap to make but incredibly expensive under patent. gives the example of a new and v effective breast cancer drug which is sold for £90,000 and therefore unavailable on the NHS. compulsory licensing would mean the government removing the UK patent and paying some compensation; then generic versions can be made. this model is attractive but could have long term implications for pharmaceutical research funding

What might the implications of this be? What related resources have you seen?
