Self-driving boats to be launched in Amsterdam this year

Signal of change / Self-driving boats to be launched in Amsterdam this year

By Neil Gunn / 22 Feb 2017
Hot on the heals of the flourishing self-driving car market comes self-driving boats. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is trialling them this year, to transport tourists, do deliveries and monitor air and water pollution (including the many bicycles that end up in the canals each year!). They could even link together to create temporary bridges or floating platforms to help in emergencies or create water-based venues.

So what?

The boats have the potential to reduce road traffic and the associated pollution and accidents that come with it. The initiative could lead to further trials in other cities around the world.
