China bans importation of waste

Signal of change / China bans importation of waste

By Ella-Louise Micallef / 29 Jan 2018

In January 2018, China began enforcing new rules that ban the importation of 24 grades of solid waste, including mixed paper and plastics. Britain alone has shipped 2.7m tonnes of plastic waste since 2012.

So what?

The new legislation creates strong impetus for the UK, Hong Kong and other countries to take action on waste management and develop their own recycling.

Will this provide a boost for the circular economy?
