BP has committed to adding rapid charging points to its UK petrol stations within the next two months. It has invested £3.5 million in the US firm Freewire Technologies, which will provide the charging units. The trial will begin in February before expanding to its European locations.
With lack of public charging points considered one of the main deterrents to buying electric cars, this could provide a major boost to this sector, though BP has neglected to mention how many petrol stations will receive the charging points.
Are we likely to see other petroleum companies offering electric charging points in the near future? Does this suggest a move within the petroleum industry to more sustainable methods of powering transport?
