New process to convert waste water from dairies into animal feed

Signal of change / New process to convert waste water from dairies into animal feed

By Shola Powell / 28 Feb 2018

Professor Lars at the University of Tübingen and his colleagues have developed a bioprocess to convert acid whey, a particular waste water developed in the dairy process, into animal feed - and with further processing into aviation fuel.

The process involves microbiome cultures, similar to those found in the human gut, which transform the waste water into an antimicrobial animal feed to prevent disease.

So what?

This process could have an impact on the amount of waste produced by dairies; for every litre of milk used, two litres of acid whey is produced.

With a further refinery process, this could be an alternative renewable source for aviation fuel.
