Human cells grown in sheep embryos could change human organ transplants

Signal of change / Human cells grown in sheep embryos could change human organ transplants

By Shola Powell / 23 Feb 2018

Scientists have successfully grown sheep embryos housing human cells. This breakthrough could lead to growing human organs inside animal organs, not only increasing supply, but also allowing organs to be genetically tailored for the receiving patient.

So what?

Currently, there is a long waiting list and high demand for organs. In the UK, according to NHS Blood and Transplant, nearly 460 people died waiting for organs in 2016. Even the best matched organs are continuously attacked by the immune system and may not last very long. This process could shorten the transplant waiting list and remove the possibility of patients rejecting organs.
