CDs and vinyl outselling downloads of music

Signal of change / CDs and vinyl outselling downloads of music

By Shola Powell / 23 Mar 2018

CDs and vinyl are the top-selling format for music, below streaming, according to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Since 2012, downloads began to outsell physical forms of media and by 2016, the revenue from downloads passed that of physical media as well. However, download revenues fell 25% in 2017, and CDs and vinyl only dropped 4%, and so they are now the top of non-streaming music formats.

So what?

As we move into a society that is seemingly becoming more digital and computer-dependent, these sales indicate that people are still holding on to non-digital music formats, perhaps out of nostalgia, or habit. As streaming continues to grow, how will CDs and vinyl fare, especially as technology has becomes less compatible with physical media (i.e. laptops without CD drives, etc.)?
