Littercoin: a blockchain reward for producing Open Geospatial Data on plastic pollution anywhere

Signal of change / Littercoin: a blockchain reward for producing Open Geospatial Data on plastic pollution anywhere

By Ella-Louise Micallef / 10 Apr 2018

The OpenLitterMap Foundation has created a blockchain reward system for anyone who wants to help map plastic pollution. Littercoin is a Citizen Science Open Data Litter-Mapping Game that allows users anywhere to receive recognition for mapping and producing open data on plastic pollution. Users can choose to receive a weekly payment in Littercoin, which is mined through the production of open data. The data produced is then verified, before being made accessible for anyone to download and reuse for any purpose.

So what?

Littercoin creates a financial incentive for people to go out and collect data on plastic pollution, and in turn this data can be used to improve clean-up efforts through the better allocation of resources. It also helps redefine people’s relationship with plastic, and creates greater awareness on the scale of the issue.
