99% emissions cut from cows when fed on seaweed diet

Signal of change / 99% emissions cut from cows when fed on seaweed diet

By Ella-Louise Micallef / 06 Jun 2018

Preliminary research has demonstrated that by adding a small amount of marine algae to cattle food it can reduce methane emissions from cattle gut microbes by as much as 99%. Scientists from California are now conducting the first ever tests of seaweed feed on live dairy cows, with initial results looking promising.

So what?

Providing this is a success, this could help drastically reduce methane emissions from cattle, which would be hugely beneficial in the fight against climate change.
