Signal of change / New Zealanders show strong support for Zero Carbon economy by 2050

By Katrina Mataciunaite / 05 Sep 2018

New Zealanders have expressed an unprecedented level of support for a carbon neutral economy by 2050 in the country’s public consultation on the Zero Carbon Bill. The climate change minister James Shaw has stated that the 10,000 responses received from individuals, NGO’s and businesses are 20 times more the usual number expected. The submissions have now been anaylsed and officials are now preparing the bill for its first reading in parliament.

So what?

The high volume of submissions received in response to the consultation could be said to reveal popular support for the ambitious goal of a carbon neutral economy in New Zealand. In turn, this could significantly influence the country’s trajectory towards a more sustainable economy, a decision that will have been consulted and voted on by the public.
