In August 2021, Zanzibar’s Ministry of Health successfully scaled its digital community health program nationwide. The program is called Jamii ni Afya, and it is transforming how healthcare is accessed and delivered by connecting every household to a dedicated community health worker as part of a comprehensive, digitally-enabled health system.
So what?
Now, all of Zanzibar’s 1.6 million people can receive proactive essential health services in their community. Digitally enabled community health workers consistently provide high-quality services based on government standards, and data is generated and captured in real-time by Zanzibar’s national health information systems. This formal linkage not only enables client referrals to services at health facilities but also enhances the ability of supervisors and managers to make evidence-informed decisions. And, the government has codified Jamii ni Afya in national policy, qualifying the program to receive direct government and multilateral funding and demonstrating their commitment to continue transforming the primary health system in the future.
