France is the latest nation to join the ‘High Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean’ joining countries such as Australia, Japan and the United States. Much like other agreements, the commitments are “nation-specific, voluntary and non-binding.”
So what?
Whilst the details of the plans are yet to be revealed, the intentions are to be a balance between economic development and ocean conservation. This initiative hopes to make the environment a priority where other policies have failed to.
France and the other nations who form the panel now have the potential to use their position to encourage more to join and spread the learnings they gather from the collaboration. Could we see ocean management and conservation move up the agenda for more nations?
