To reduce its impact, the major UK retailer Iceland has committed to eliminating plastic packaging for its own brand products within the next five years. It plans to harness new technologies to create a range of packaging containing paper and pulp trays, alongside fully recyclable paper bags.
Iceland and Tesco are already the first supermarkets in the UK to back the introduction of a nationwide bottle deposit return scheme (DRS) to help reduce plastic pollution. Consumers pay a small deposit for plastic and glass bottles which will be refunded upon return to a shop.
