Education under the Democratic Federation of Northern Syria, a semi-autonomous region established by Syrian Kurds – with the support of the US military to help fight ISIS, emphasises the equal rights of students of different ethnicities by preparing curricula in Kurdish, Arabic and Syriac languages.
In September 2018, the Training Committee in Democratic Society introduced into the curriculum ‘Jineology’: the science of women – from the Kurdish word ‘jin’ for ‘woman’ or ‘life’, and the Greek word ‘logos’ for ‘reason’.
The curriculum for the first grade is composed of four sections: gender, the nature of women, the identity of women in society, and the liberalization of sexual discrimination in society.
