UK LGBT rights charity, Stonewall is currently administering a program to empower LGBTQ+ people of colour (PoC) and black, Asian and minority ethnicities (BAME) to bring about positive change in their communities. The program, supported by Comic Relief, is running under the youth branch of the charity since December 2018 for people aged 16 to 25 belonging to “specific diversity strands under the LGBTQ+ umbrella”. All Stonewall staff facilitating this programme will identify as BAME/PoC and LGBTQ+.
So far the program has included participants reflecting on their own identity and experience, getting skills to campaign for equality and hearing from activists and ‘role models’ from the BAME/PoC LGBTQ+ communities. In early 2020 participants will be “offered the opportunity to develop and deliver content for an exciting youth event which will showcase the campaigns as well as explore other issues affecting young LGBTQ+ people”. Stonewall aims to generate “positive self care and resilience, confidence to carry out effective campaign, a network of people for support and inspiration” amongst other things through a number of exercises, workshops and sessions.
