After nearly a century of listing on the Dow Jones Industrial Average, Exxon Mobil was removed from the index. There is now only one oil company listed on the index – Chevron.

So what?

Does the de-listing of American oil supermajor Exxon Mobil signal the end of oil as the primary underpinning resource of our economies? If so, what might the faster-than-anticipated decline of oil mean for other sectors, communities, and livelihoods that we may not be anticipating?

Furthermore, could the rapid shift away from oil effect natural gas demand, and if so, could we see civil unrest as is often the case during transition periods?
