South African health officials pause rollout of AstraZeneca’s coronavirus vaccine after a study showed it offered reduced protection from the Covid-19 variant identified there.
So what?
Possibility of waves of new, vaccine-resistant variants, especially if roll-out of vaccines is not done swiftly, to those most at risk. Implications if we see vaccine resistant variants — increased importance on continued vaccine development, faster and better distribution, possibly even annual vaccination requirements. In the short-term, we could see shifts in healthcare, childcare, eldercare, work, covid tracking, economic closures, personal safety, travel restrictions, social interaction, perceptions of trust and distrust, migration, and more, as the world responds.
