Recent evidence from scientists in Quebec suggests that algae could be used to generate electricity. Their research shows that algae could currently power small cloud-connected electronic devices, such as Fitbits or Apple watches.
So what?
Although the concept is still new, the idea that algae could be an alternative source of renewable energy is growing. Unlike solar energy, it would benefit from not needing direct exposure to sunlight to produce energy. Additionally, it is a carbon-negative technology as it absorbs CO2 from the atmosphere to produce a current. With water being its only by-product, the potential for algae to produce electricity on a greater scale could be transformative in the clean renewable energy space.
