Costa Rica’s new president, Carlos Alvarado, announced plans to ban fossil fuels during his inaugural speech on 9 May 2018. He stated “Decarbonisation is the great task of our generation and Costa Rica must be one of the first countries in the world to accomplish it, if not the first.” He plans to end the use of fossil fuel based transport by 2021, the 200th year of Costa Rican independence.
