Five supporters of the Just Stop Oil climate campaign who conspired to cause gridlock on London’s orbital motorway have been sentenced to lengthy jail terms by a judge who told them they had “crossed the line from concerned campaigner to fanatic”.
Four out of 5 received 4 years in jail while the fifth member received 5 years. The sentences are thought to be the longest sentences ever given in the UK for non-violent protest.
This is a concerning signal as it paves the way for more action against environmental protest or any other peaceful protests that challenges the interest of the government and doesn’t take into account the context of environmental damage underway.
