Google’s new product, Career Certificates, teach “job-ready skills” for high-demand roles such as IT support, with three further courses in the pipeline – targeting UX designers, data analysts and project managers.
The training programmes are delivered 100% online, require no previous formal education, last up to 6 months and cost approximately $300. The package includes support with job hunting upon graduation. Google has also pledged to sponsor 100,000 courses for those in need.
So what?
The certified courses have been met with a huge demand and received raving reviews from 85% of all enrolled students. Google’s promise to treat the certificates, prized at a fraction of a college degree’s cost, as the equivalent of a four-year degree in their own hiring processes puts a huge question mark on the future relevance of higher education for IT-related careers.
