To tackle traffic congestion and air pollution, Nottingham City Council introduced a Workplace Parking Levy (WPL) which placed a modest charge on employers providing 11 or more parking places. It has reinvested the revenue back into sustainable transport including electric buses, trams and a public transport smartcard. This initiative is now, controversially, on the agenda for other UK cities.
