Nuclear Fusion moves one step closer

The EAST Fusion Facility in Heifei, China created a plasma gas that heated 120 million degrees Celsius and kept it there for 101 seconds setting a world record for both heat and duration.

So what?

Using nuclear fusion to produce electricity has been talked about for decades, but no experiment has managed to produce more energy than it needs. This recent experiment means that the dream of nuclear fusion may be one step closer. If nuclear fusion, was to eventually scale up this would be a major shift in society, as the process could potentially produce unlimited clean energy, without the same dangers than exist in traditional nuclear power plants.
