Tobacco company Phillip Morris International has launched an aggressive anti-smoking campaign. It is urging consumers to give up cigarettes, whilst the company itself commits to “stop selling cigarettes in the UK”, though it has provided no timeline. It has placed ads in several newspapers, encouraging readers to join the ‘smoke-free’ movement, and has launched a website to support smokers during the task of quitting.
The company is hoping this will lead to an increase in demand for smoke-free alternatives, such as e-cigarettes – some of which are still tobacco-based and contain nicotine, and has begun to research and expand the availability of its alternative products in the UK.
